6th Sept 22.30 UTC Dolphin and Union Strait

NorthaboutLeg3NWpassageNo Comments07/09/2016
This is the navigation marker which is at the Western end of the NW Passage proper.  It is on Cape Bexley at 69d 00.77N 115d 55.44W. This is a pretty bleak place. Taking down the mainsail

What I find interesting is that the North East Passage had a lot of freighter traffic. We have not seen one other ship or vessel, in the North West Passage and yet the North West Passage is shorter and with less red tape.

Since the NE Passage it has become quite common for me to be lying in bed absolutely convinced that I was at the helm.

Ben Edwards, crew. UTC 6 Sept We’re now in the North West Passage proper.  We’re further east than the outermost islands of the massive archipelago that is northern Canada.  We are also two thirds of the way round the world….

From Tuk in 24 hours we did 169 NM, great mileage. We have a following wind, and the viking has us goose winged. Jarlath would be proud how she is sailing

You can see from the picture of the wind direction indicator at the top of the mast that we have the wind directly behind us today which in many ways is a very good thing.  There are however a few...

If there’s one thing this trip has taught me, it’s how to wait.

Ben Edwards, crew, whole expedition, Beaufort Sea 5th Sept So we left Tuk yesterday.  As usual we left during my watch.  It’s extraordinary, the only time we’ve left a place not on my watch was when we left the stamukha…

Tuk was a great tonic. So up this Tuktoyaktuk shelf, where you can normally see bowhead whales, we just saw lots of timber from the Mackenzie Delta
