We will overnight as close as possible to the eastern entrance of this magnificent Sound in order to make clean and early exit to sea tomorrow morning.

Prince Christian Sound, abeam SERMIT AKUNERAT no wind, no significant ice, water 4.2, air 5c, overcast. 2nd October

Grease ice forming around the hull woke us all as it expanded and formed in the anchorage, early hours, and moved off, you could hear the catching and scraping amplified by the hull shape below decks. We moved off east, shadowed by an Inuit father and three children in a fast runabout, the smallest around 5, barely able to hold the transom, all friendly waves and smiles, and with a mutual photo opportunity completed, they peeled off for the days Sunday fishing and hunting. A good life!

We will overnight as close as possible to the eastern entrance of this magnificent Sound in order to make  clean and early exit to sea tomorrow morning. The system we have been avoiding seems to have started to decay and with a predicted wind strength around 35 knots, going our way it is within my comfort level for departure.

We complete our final preparation for sea, – fitting survival suits, tie down of batteries, stowage for sea and a general talk through – walk through of possible scenarios we will have to deal with.

Mike

If only I were younger! But I count myself very fortunate that I have twice voyaged around Spitzbergen. Will be watching your progress closely.
