Mountaineers and polar explorers still struggle a bit with protecting their faces from the extreme cold and biting winds in high mountains and polar regions. However the motorbike, quad bike and skidoo community have had this problem for years and have got it properly sorted out – the answer is neoprene face masks and they are cheap and work brilliantly in the worst conditions.
I found this one in the car spares shop in Barrow being sold to locals for their quad bikes and skidoos. Benji used to watch the Transformers films, and I thought he would like the design. He he is wearing it on with Baffin Island in the background.
PS – To budding explorers – yes, do get your face protection from a motorbike shop not a mountaineering shop.

Hempie, have you heard that HMS Terror has been found?
Steve and rest of crew. We have been following the journey closely. Wonderful achievement and a great experience. However, the observations on conditions make salutary reading in a historical context!
