Skirted more ice, interesting, a couple of freighters were asking us for the latest ice info.
I think we are finally clear, and a big THANK YOU to Sergai Deynekns. He was the man who did the BBQ back in Murmansk and has given us daily weather and ice information to Nikolai. Critical at times. He will be on my Xmas Card list.
So a day of punching against the wind, which makes the sea choppy, and bed uncomfortable. Sail in and out , as heading right into wind, we are hoping it will back later to give us some help. The boat has also passed the 5000 miles from Bristol today. A big milestone.
As we have come so far South, the mountains on the mainland can now be clearly seen. The highest since Murmansk. We are also just passing Pevek. I came here many years ago with James Gray MP, it was his big first Arctic trip. Many moons later he is now the Chair of the Polar Regions in Parliament. I’m sure I have the title wrong, but all things start from a small beginning. On that trip we landed on Wrangel Island, this time I shall just see it in the far distance. For me a major milestone, if nothing else for the date line. Wrangel is supposedly the last place the Hairy mammoth roamed. A lot of scientists were trying to find remains from the melting permafrost. One Scientist told us they could now drill a hole in the tusk and tell you the lifestory of that animal. When it was born, male or female and other essential data. Amazing what you can get out of DNA now.

Can you pass onto David that we are reading his ship’s log every day and are really enjoying his reports. Well done with progress so far and our fingers are crossed for the next bit of the voyage. Graham.
Thanks! And all the comments we get to read 🙂
