NorthaboutExpedition Log06/08/2016
Waking up in our blue lagoon Nordenshel’da Archipelago 1 Aug Our new friend Denis fishing Denis Davydov birthday party 6 Aug

I have discovered that I have managed to completely reverse my body clock. We’ve got the same light level all day so there’s nothing that stops you changing your mind as to when the day or night is.

Ben Edwards, anchored Nordenshel’da Archipelago just at the start of the Vilkitsky strait in the South Kara Sea Written at 0100, in my ‘evening’ I have discovered that I have managed to completely reverse my body clock.  We’ve got the same light level…

The storm has peaked. Our view is spotted monotone whiteout, 2C gale gusting to 38 knots. Boiled potatoes, with herring & vodka for dinner

Friday evening 5 August Nordenshel’da Archipelago just at the start of the Vilkitsky strait in the South Kara Sea So lots going on, it’s amazing how you can make yourself busy out of nothing. Same place, same time. Ros changed the Anchor…

Translated from Russian audio. During the North East Passage. Anchored at Ostrov Pilota Makhotkina 5 August 2016 Этот маршрут я уже прошел в 1998 1999 годах. Яхта Апостол Андрей и я первыми кто это сделал в истории яхтинга I’ve already…

Last night 35 Knots, our little boat rocked around in our sheltered Cove halyards clanking against the mast, we were safe from the roaring seas outside, but its frustrating not to get going

Thursday evening 4th August, Nordenshel’da Archipelago just at the start of the Vilkitsky strait in the South Kara Sea Every night we stay here, the night seems to get longer. Partly because everyone is going to bed earlier. That is probably because the…

We are, at best, voyeurs: The sea and sky are constantly front and center stage with an illusive wind and ice pas de deux

Constance Difede, crew, from anchored in Ostrov Pilota Makhotkino After fourteen days the Arctic Ocean has shrunk. It is now the Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea and East Siberian Sea.  Two down, two to go before the Bering Strait.  As…

Toasts to heros Bill Tillman Boris Vilkitsky Khariton & Dmitry Laptev Pilota (Vasiliy) Makhotkino

NorthaboutShips log6 Comments03/08/2016

Same place, same time. one day on 3 Aug One of my heroes is Bill Tillman, A great climber and sailer.  He wrote, one of the biggest dangers in base camp was ‘bed sores’. During the night the wind changed…

The welders gas bottle produces a huge jet of flame from the hob. So now making a cup of tea is one of the most exciting things to do on the boat.

Ben Edwards from anchored in Nordenshel’da Archipelago, south Kara Sea Hello again.  So, as I said earlier we did indeed gain more knowledge today of the ice and that that knowledge was that the ice had closed over the passage with…

The sad problem is that a thin bit of passage between the mainland and a large island, that bit is blocked by ice that we could almost get through but in practise shouldn’t try to.

NorthaboutCrew(b)logNo Comments03/08/2016

So.  Yesterday we did indeed get the ice maps we wanted and yes, they did say a lot that was good.  We can now get through the Laptev sea.  Over the passed week enough ice has either melted or shifted…
