Constance Difede from dodging ice in the laptev sea
“Pantone Palette”
Fog and Ice. Without wind, the sea and the sky are the same hue as the fog. The fog has added another dimension to Arctic helming. Hide and Seek. The ice is shrouded within fog. We have a complex relationship with this ice. It is at once compelling and repulsive. We must find it to avoid it. We are drawn to its beauty. The play of light. With no visible sun, the ice still sheds a luminescent glow on the horizon. We are drawn to its beauty. It is a resting place for gulls and seals. Like snowflakes, each drift carries its own signature. No two are alike. We are comforted by its presence. It stamps our place and time. We are in the Arctic. It is summertime. And yet, we know the ice is a dangerous beauty. It holds the power to capture us, delay us, destroy us. Its power is other worldly. A temptress along with the sea and the wind, sailors must suppress its siren song.
