The military background types on board say “chuff chart” I initially assumed this was a diagram we had to produce each evening to reflect how pleased we were with ourselves; alas….

Andrew Coulthurst, 1st Mate for the Atlantic crossing 6th October (from Mid North Atlantic Ocean)

A New Vocabulary…

With two former members of the armed services aboard there has inevitably been some military banter knocking around. Most of it is reasonably easy to decipher, for example the acronym ‘RV’ is rendez-vous, while the abbreviation ‘recon’ meaning reconnoitre. Then there is QAQC (quality assured quality control) and ‘deploying the asset’, which is how Mike likes to refer to Ben’s photography and digital compressing skills. All very Jason Bourne, or perhaps SF (Special Forces).

‘Gash’ it turns out isn’t in fact a nasty cut, but instead refers to the rubbish. My personal favourite so far is ‘chuff chart’ (especially the way DavidWD says it). I initially assumed this was a diagram we had to produce each evening to reflect how pleased we were with ourselves; alas it turns out it’s nothing more than a summary list.

Hello Andrew, So glad you have been appointed 1st Mate. That’s probably why you’ve been given the best bunk. Hope the Musk Ox stew was tender. If so, please give me the recipe. We marinated ours for several days & put it in the ‘outside fridge’. Hope weather is now being kind to you after a rough start. The North Atlantic sounds as if she is in full majesty.
