1 October Wind North west 15KT,996 hpa and falling, air temp is …c, water temp is 5.4c. Large grounded Iceberg on our track south. no other ice. Some coastal traders heading north laden and south unladen. position 59,58.7N,44,47.8W
We departed our top quality anchorage at 8,45, after a quick visit to the bay ashore, a small graveyard lies there with pink plastic petals scattered about in the breeze, white home made crosses in 2 x 1, seven adults and one child lie there for eternity, looking south towards the sea. Not a bad spot to end up. And if theres a way to get back you can hang around the hotpool and spook the odd tourist. The locals would just laugh at you. Behind us massive ice capped mountains, with enormous mist covered valleys totally dominated our arc of view from shoulder to shoulder. There were some very quiet moments on board, as we as a crew took in the majesty of the mountain formations around us. Mind numbing precipices and sheer, 1000 meter walls of ice shrouded wall were less that 500 meters from the boat as we turned and twisted down the valley southwards in around 100 meters of water. We had to strain our necks vertically, jaws open, to take in the ultimate peaks above, us they were so steep and vertical and so close. I keep getting the scale wrong, sure I’m looking at distant shorelines, certain those things are plastic drink cups and bits of rubbish , and then, turning out to be rows of houses and sheds of a small harbour community. Everything is set on a vast scale and the eye can not take it all in correctly.
This land is the exact, absolute, perfect opposite of sitting in a London station cafe, eating a dodgy sausage roll, waiting for your train , checking Facebook.
Thank you Polarocean for giving us the opportunity to bring the boat home to Bristol, we didn’t imagine we would be seeing all this.
We head today into our fjord system that will give us safe haven and a take off point in the next two days east as the low about 100 miles out to see spends its energy.

Fantastic commentary but have to say, the air temp was not 19C and the water certainly wasn’t 54.6C…!!! Global warming may be a reality but I think it will be a while longer before we see temps like that around Greenland!
Thanks,
Hello Phil thankyou for the ! Looks like some decimal points went awry. Somewhat warm for the fishes if true! We’re checking the log book and correcting!
