Last couple of days have been interesting. Great thing about modern weather charts, you can predict whats going to happen. we were in for a couple of days of stormy weather. I was taught to get a reef in before you need it, the Russians believe put a reef in when you need it, subtle difference. In the end, we put all three in.
Autopilot struggling because of the magnetic strength , but also the sea state. Seas grew, and we had a BEAUFORT 7/8, Which was testing. So we all took it in turns to helm.
Interesting peoples attitude to adversity, and this crew were brilliant. Some say they were petrified, but still got on the helm. The photo is of (Constance helming)
I had an interesting Watch this morning. Just crawled out of bed, rocking and rolling getting ready. I even put my second thermals on, checked the log to see what was happening. clipped on before leaving the saloon, and clipped on behind the wheel.
Just sitting down, put my leg up for stability and a wave came across the boat. Didn’t see it or hear it. For a fraction of a second, my whole body was under water, and it was only my leg stopping me going out of the side, and hopefully my tether would have stopped me going over completely.
I Actually had a mouth full of sea water which was novel. Nikolai thought it was hilarious. Im just very pleased it was me and not one of the lighter ladies.
So again, as predicted, winds died down as the low has passed us. Now heading east to find an island we can shelter and wait for favourable ice. We can do some running maintenance and have a shave. Thats maintenance to the boat, not me !
Hopefully this storm might have had an impact on the ice conditions, and loosened it up.
